It is a profitable business expected to grow further—even if whitening results are not always easy to see.

What turns an ordinary toothpaste into a whitening paste?

Two main ingredients: a whitening agent such as carbamide peroxide or sodium tripolyphosphate, plus an abrasive such as silica (or calcium carbonate or dicalcium phosphate). The whitening chemical usually gets all the credit, but most of the work is done by tiny silica particles.

The effect of whitening agents such as carbamide peroxide on tooth shade usually depends on concentration and contact time. Because concentrations in toothpastes are very low, and each brushing lasts only seconds or minutes, there is little time for a chemical reaction on the tooth surface.

What actually removes stains from the tooth surface is abrasion—and silica-like abrasives in whitening pastes are responsible. Essentially all toothpastes remove surface stains today; whitening pastes use stronger abrasive blends so results appear faster.

Possible risks of whitening toothpastes

When does abrasive action become harmful? As those tiny silica particles scrub stains away, they may also remove a little enamel. Some dentists worry that long-term use of highly abrasive pastes can weaken enamel enough for plaque bacteria to attack the teeth themselves.

How can you tell how abrasive your toothpaste is?

The American Dental Association tests commercial toothpastes in the U.S. and ranks them by Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA). The ADA accepts pastes rated 250 or below; the FDA prefers ratings under 200. If you do not know your whitening paste’s RDA, ask the manufacturer using the package or tube information.

Many dentists still do not fully trust RDA as a safety measure. Long-term multi-year studies are often lacking (whitening research is relatively new), and some people overuse whitening products in pursuit of the whitest possible smile.

How do you care for tooth health—not only appearance?

Keep these basics and see your dentist regularly:

Alternate use — switch between whitening and regular pastes. You do not need whitening paste every day; give enamel a few gentler days each month.

Look for the ADA Seal — so you know the paste was evaluated by licensed professionals.

Choose pastes that support remineralization — newer mineral-building ingredients help strengthen enamel and add protection for people who whiten.

Do not over-abrade — if you have sensitive teeth, choose a lower-RDA paste.

[88
90
post-2344","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-preventive-dentistry-oral-hygiene","tag-featured
["GET
