The Egyptians called it the “plant of immortality” for its ability to thrive in harsh conditions—even without soil. Aloe vera (“alloeh”—bitter and shiny substance in Arabic; “vera”—truth in Latin) is a legendary medicinal plant, rich in vitamins and minerals, with a long tradition of supporting human health. Cleopatra and Nefertiti used it in their beauty routines; Alexander the Great and Christopher Columbus used it to heal battle wounds. Plants have always been used for healing, and in recent years their popularity has grown as natural options with fewer side effects—but what can this “wonder plant” do for oral health?

About 75 beneficial constituents have been identified in aloe, spanning several groups:

Vitamins and minerals — including A, C, E, B1, B2, B3, B6, and even B12, which is rare in plants. Aloe is also rich in folic acid, beta-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol (a form of vitamin E). Vitamins A, E, and C are important antioxidants that support the immune system against “invaders.” Vitamin C also aids wound healing and collagen formation. Increased collagen together with elastin contributes to an anti-aging effect.

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic compounds — enzymes that reduce inflammation (for example bradykinase) and salicylic acid, an aspirin-like compound with pain-relieving effects. Plant sterols are also anti-inflammatory; one of them, lupeol, acts as both an antiseptic and an analgesic.

Immune modulators — complex sugars, notably acemannan, which has been shown to support antibody levels, provide antiviral effects, reduce secondary infections, and markedly increase white-cell activity.

Antioxidants and anticancer activity — gel constituents that neutralize free radicals and toxins we encounter daily, plus components shown to inhibit tumor development—alongside immune support that helps identify and neutralize abnormal cells.

So what does this have to do with dentistry?

Aloe has several topical uses with positive effects on teeth, gums, and soft tissues:

Healing soft-tissue disorders such as aphthous ulcers (canker sores), burns, gum cuts and abrasions, mucositis (in cancer patients after head-and-neck radiation), and inflammatory conditions such as lichen planus. Topical aloe supports healing and symptom relief—reducing pain and discomfort naturally and safely. It can also speed healing at extraction sites.

Gingivitis and periodontal disease — thanks to antiseptic action, reduced inflammation, and improved healing, aloe can meaningfully support gum inflammation and periodontal disease alongside routine care (scaling). The same applies around implants (peri-implantitis) and wisdom teeth; it is sometimes used in periodontal surgery as well.

Bad breath — to help prevent oral malodor, mix about a quarter cup of natural aloe gel with half a cup of water or apple juice. This also helps with stomach-related odors, and aloe fights bacteria and fungi that contribute to bad breath.

Cavity prevention — aloe can fight caries bacteria and many other microbes, supporting tooth health. Studies have also suggested enamel-rebuilding properties, so it may serve as an adjunct or alternative approach alongside fluoride toothpaste strategies.

Preventing yeast, infections, and viruses — aloe’s antimicrobial properties help discourage oral candida, bacteria, and viruses such as herpes.

Dentures — aloe gel under dentures can help prevent infection and soothe soft tissues; its slight adhesiveness also helps keep the denture in place.

How to use? Aloe is available in dental products and dedicated preparations, or in small amounts in its natural form: one tablespoon as a mouth rinse up to three times a day (the material may be swallowed if appropriate for you).

When not to use? Topical use or rinses have almost no side effects compared with many pharmaceutical agents—it is available, inexpensive, and easy to use. With swallowing, watch the amount: excess can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, kidney-function disturbances, and more. It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for people allergic to plants in the Liliaceae family. Before broader use, patch-test a small area to rule out local redness, itching, or burning.

[85,84,88

post-2372","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-innovations-in-dentistry","category-oral-and-whole-body-health","category-preventive-dentistry-oral-hygiene
["GET
