Amalgam and Mercury Fillings

Amalgam and mercury fillings – what to know before replacing them

For decades, amalgam (“silver”) fillings were a common restorative material because of their durability. Today we know amalgam contains high percentages of mercury—a toxic metal that can be released over time, especially during chewing, heating, or wear. In biological dentistry we view amalgam fillings not only as an aesthetic issue but as a factor that may affect overall health. Mercury can accumulate in tissues and affect the nervous, hormonal, and immune systems—especially in sensitive people or those with existing chronic conditions. At Dr. Yarden’s clinic we remove amalgam fillings safely and under protective conditions, including: strong suction and advanced air filtration; full protection for patient and team with rubber dams and respiratory protection; effective cooling to reduce vapor release; and clean air/oxygen during treatment. After removal we use biocompatible, metal-free materials that restore tooth structure naturally. Nutritional support and gentle detoxification can be added when appropriate. Replacing amalgam is not only an aesthetic step—it is an opportunity to renew oral health in a safer way. If you have old silver fillings and are unsure whether or when to remove them, we recommend a comprehensive biological evaluation. Together we will assess your teeth and overall health and build a safe, precise, personal plan.
